ClientKORAD

Year2012 - 2015

LocationGyeongju, Korea

Scale Site Area: 31,888㎡
G.F.A.: 12,365㎡

The headquarters building of the Korea Nuclear Environment Corporation is a public institution building located in Gyeongju, with a site area of 31,888 square meters and a total floor area of 12,365 square meters on a single-story structure. The design was based on the analysis of major linear elements derived from the current topography and conditions. These linear elements were used to create spatial divisions along the visual and spatial axes, harmoniously blending with the existing landscape, particularly the Gyeongju Namsan mountain.

Considering the expansive site and the surrounding landscape, the main facilities were placed on the ground level to maximize usability, natural lighting, and ventilation. The rooftop was designed as a walkable area with a grassy landscape, relaxation chairs, and a pressure-sensitive walkway, making it an inviting space for building occupants. The rooftop garden was designed for easy access by local residents, promoting interaction and providing a space for relaxation.

To minimize the impact on the historical and cultural environment, the building's roof was treated with artificial vegetation and a green roof system. The exterior color palette was chosen to harmonize with the surrounding landscape, considering eight colors and eleven shades. The headquarters building of the Korea Nuclear Environment Corporation is recognized as an excellent green building and received the highest energy efficiency rating (Grade 1). It was also the recipient of the 7th Gyeongju City Architectural Award in 2017.
