An environmental impact assessment was conducted for the Sookseong to Pyeongtaek section of the railway construction plan, which is part of Phase 1 of the project. This project aims to address the increased volume of freight transportation between Pyeongtaek Port and its hinterland industrial complexes, establish an integrated railway transportation network connecting the Gyeongbu Line, West Coast Line, and the double-tracking of the Pyeongtaek to Wonju railway line, as well as construct a railway for the relocation of military bases. In the long term, it aims to serve as the starting point for the construction of an east-west inland railway network, connecting Pyeongtaek to Wonju, Gangneung, and beyond, efficiently connecting the entire nation's transportation network.
