The Polar Research Institute is a subsidiary institution of the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology, serving as the only polar research institution in Korea. Situated in Songdo International City, the Polar Research Institute is an 11,810 square meter facility located within the Songdo International City Advanced Industrial Cluster, developed to advance scientific and technological progress in Incheon. A symbolic public square was created to allow a panoramic view of the main building located at the protruding corner and the entire research institute. The main tower of the research institute was designed to break away from the monotonous grid pattern of the nearby area's urban landscape and impart new symbolism. The Polar Research Institute consists of four main programs: office management, research, research support, and dormitories, essential for efficient research and management. The facade of the main building of the research institute represents extreme climates and icebergs through the slanting patterns of glazing panels resembling curtain walls. The fortium is shaped like a hill to represent the iceberg of the polar region, revealing the institute's programs and main functions through the facade's concept. Furthermore, the grid-like appearance using glazing panels allows the diffusion of natural light and provides excellent insulation, making it an environmentally friendly design.
